Cyanobacteria are a new, largely unexploited source for natural products with a huge variability in structure and biological activity. To date about 800 natural products from cyanobacteria have been described in the literature. Two compounds have already been in phase II clinical trials. Apart from pharmacologically interesting activities (cytotoxic, antialgal, herbicidal, antifungal, antimicrobial, immunosuppressive, ACE-inhibitory, protease- and phosphatase-inhibitory) cyanobacteria also produce very potent toxins, e.g. the microcystins.
Employing an established technology Cyano Biotech screens cyanobacterial strains for novel compounds, whereby the main focus is on peptide-containing structures. These compounds are purified by HPLC-MS.
