Microcystins are cyclic heptapeptides that belong to most widely investigated secondary metabolites from cyanobacteria. To date more than 100 structural variants produced by the 4 genera Microcystis, Anabaena, Nostoc, and Planktothrix have been described.
Microcystins are used as reference substances (standards) in water analytics, as well as analytic/diagnostic bio-reagents for the characterisation and purification of eukaryotic protein phosphatases.
