Cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria are oxygenic photosynthetic gram negative bacteria formerly known as blue green algae. Cyanobacteria have an enormous diversity in species and strains. Cyanobacteria can be found in freshwater lakes and oceans, as well as in deserts, hot and acidic springs, and even in the arctic ice. Cyanobacteria are a new source of novel natural products with pharmacological activities, e.g. cytotoxic, antifungal, antibacterial, immunosuppressive and cardioactive compounds, which are potential lead structures for the pharma industry in drug discovery.
