Cyano Biotech GmbH is a spin-off from the Institute of Biology of Humboldt-University, Berlin. The company aims at the commercial exploitation of the results of 20 years of R&D in the field of cyanobacteria generated by the group of Prof. Dr. Thomas Börner (Dept. of Genetics). The formation of Cyano Biotech was preceded by the „Gründerlabor Biotechnologie“ at Humboldt-University in 2001 led by Dan Kramer. Successful feasibility studies undertaken in cooperation with an industrial partner with respect to the commercial exploitation of cyanobacteria as a source for biologically active compounds led to the formation of Cyano Biotech GmbH in January 2004. The company is focused on the exploitation of novel natural products, primarily polyketides and nonribosomally formed peptides, from cyanobacteria (formerly known as blue-green algae).
